Playing on the concept that “beauty starts with food,” Nana + Livy creates bath and skin products that are all natural and food based. The brand aims to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle by creating products that are not only good for your body but also safe for the environment and animals. From chocolate dessert inspired soap bars to aromatic bath teas, Nana + Livy takes a foodie approach to natural body care, and we admit we’re just a tiny bit hungry after scrolling through their website (okay, maybe more than just a tiny bit).
We talked with Nana + Livy founder Amelia So to get to know more about her and her delicious body care line. She tells us she named the brand after her two daughters, so we know that from the very beginning the brand started with love and care (cue the aw’s). She tell us that the company blossomed out of her curiosity for soap making during Amelia’s maternity leave in 2017.
At the time, Amelia had been a public accountant for 10 years. It wasn’t until her second maternity leave that she decided to quit her job and start a new career path. She wanted more reward and happiness from the work she did. Searching for a new career made Amelia realize her passion for soap making. About taking the leap to start something new, Amelia gives us some heart-to-heart advice: you need to ask yourself if you feel fulfilled with whatever it is you are doing, and, if not, make changes in your life in ways you can.
Along with being uber-delicious and colorful—think unicorns, rainbows, and desserts—Nana + Livy is certified cruelty-free, vegan, and eco-friendly. From start to finish of crafting each of their products, the brand aims to be beneficial for both the user and the environment. For Amelia, “Good brands can assert good influences on people so it’s important for [her] to build a brand based on the right values.”
Sometimes it’s hard as a consumer to know if the products you are buying are truly sustainable and eco-friendly. A good method to go by, according to Amelia, is to keep in mind the three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Paying attention to a company’s packaging, how the products are made, and what the products are made out of are all important to consider when choosing to buy from a brand. Reduce, reuse, recycle—got it? Okay, good.
As a small business owner, Amelia knows the importance of supporting other small businesses. Going to local farmer’s markets and buying from local vendors are ways Amelia works toward an eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle while supporting businesses like her’s. So, while it may take some time before the entirety of the world is shopping, supporting, and promoting a sustainable lifestyle like Amelia’s family, Amelia has high hopes customers will gradually become more sustainable and conscious in their everyday lives. With fun and inventive eco-friendly products like Nana + Livy’s gaining popularity, we’re finding it hard to come up with reasons not to hop on the sustainable, eco-friendly living trend.
